The First Month at Sheffield

Wow, in a blink of eye...its been almost a month here in Sheffield, UK. Time really flies uh. One thing for sure, UK is a good place for exercise. We practically walk everywhere and everyday, that's the only transport we have! Not to forget the summer sales shopping at Meadowhall. Everything seems so tempting, like in the shopacholic movie! Argh, control control...

I haven't really found a spirit-filled church nearby yet. Went to one of the traditional churches in Sheffield. Now I get what the "Christian Mind" is all about. No wonder some of my seniors backslided after coming to UK.

I have to keep my focus on God, if not, you wouldn't be surprise that I could backslide too, which I do not want to. I need to get back to Malaysia, to CHC, to cell group...oh ya, thanks to Gordon for the praise n worship songs :)

Earth - our transit

God is a God of JOURNEY.

We are born on this earth for a process.

Take for example: you bought an air ticket which brings you to London for a business meeting. In the meanwhile, your flight will transit and stop in Dubai for some time. While in Dubai, you prepare and equip yourself for your meeting in London. Your final destination is London, but your transit is Dubai.

This is the same for our lives! Our destination is Heaven, our transit is on Earth. We cannot just lay back and do nothing here on earth!

What are we doing here? What is our purpose?

Friends, let's be dilligent; be excellent in whatever we are called to do.

Let's do and achieve greater things for God. Amen.

I know, I know...my blog is kinda dead. But don't worry, I'll surely update it more often , especially when I'm in UK (June-Oct). teeheehee...

Oh ya, thanks to everyone who congratulated me on my final semester results. Praise God! But sometimes I feel like I have to act like a victim in order to console my classmates, since many of them did not do too well. (Next target: CLT exams this sat)

Facebook...facebook...I always wonder how did I ever convinced myself to sign up? sigh, can't remember. Anyway, I'm still in the process of getting the rhythm of it. So, yeah...just wait and see what happens next! Don't forget to add me!

I've been employed in Kumon centre (Kelana Square) two weeks ago as a part timer, teaching mathematics and a little bit of english. (Working hours: 9am-10pm) Erm, not exactly teaching...the word we are supposed to use is 'guiding'. Kumon's philosophy is independence. We do not spoon feed the kids. They will just come in anytime convenient for them, then do their classwork and pass up their homework for us to mark.

Sometimes I feel quite confused as to not being able to discern when I should so called 'guide' them and when to pull back. When I leave them alone to do their work, the principal will ask me to walk around and see if there is any need. When I walk around and correct the kids when they count wrongly, she will spot me and quickly shoo me back to my seat, and leave the kids alone.

Confused. Frustrated. Extremely blur. (Although I don't act like one)

Anyway, its just my nature to interact and build relationships with the kids. Some are really smart kids, but some are just simply trying to take advantage of you. A 5-year old boy came up with his own maths formula of counting fast. Its not Kumon nor Mental Arithmetic method. Brillant! A primary 6 girl thought that she was so smart that she could make me fall into her trap. But too bad, through experience...I could read her mind. Fyi, I found out that she's not that smart after marking her worksheets and found numerous mistakes.

Well, I can say that the best moments in Kumon are when there are kids around. Although some are super naughty, but generally, kids brightens up my day! On the other hand, the worst moments are when we (teachers) are left alone with the principal in the centre without any kids. Nightmare!

Kids are adorable only when parents/adults use the right disciplinary tools in the right way and right time.

Children are the best gifts from God. The more the merrier. AMEN!

What Matters Most?

God doesn't care about the size of your savings account, but He is interested in how much good you do with what you have.

God doesn't care whether or not you're wearing the hottest new shoes in town, but He does care where you walk in them.

The size of your house doesn't matter to God , but the size of your heart does.

Your CGPA or grades, the college you get accepted into, or even your major doesn't impress God as much as how you treat others.

Your popularity doesn't matter to God, but He is interested in whether you told your friends about Him.

How well you're connected doesn't matter as much to God as how well you're grounded with the right values.

God doesn't care if you can quote the law, but He is concerned with how much mercy you show others.

The frequency with which you go to church doesn't matter as much to God as the openness of your heart while you're there.

The size of your offering does not impress Him as much as how much of yourself accompanies it.

God isn't as concerned with how boldly you speak for Him as He is with how boldly you live for Him.

The Fishing Story

This story is about an investment banker and the fisherman.

One day, an investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna.

The banker complimented the fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them?

Fisherman: Oh, only a little while

Banker: Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more fish?

Fisherman: With this I have more than enough to support my family needs.

Banker: But what do you do with the rest of your time?

Fisherman: Well, I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, go for walks with my wife, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my friends. As you can see, I have a full and busy life! Banker: (Scoffed at the fisherman) I am a Harvard MBA and I can help you. You should spend more time fishing; and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat! With the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several more boats.. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to the capital city. After that, who knows, maybe you could take the world!

Fisherman: But, how long will this all take?

Banker: I'd say, about 15 to 20 years.

Fisherman: But what then?

Banker: (Laughed at the fisherman) That's the best part! When the time is right, you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich...you would make millions!!!

Fisherman: Millions?...Then what?

Banker: Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fisher village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, go for romantic walks with your wife, sip wine in evenings, then play guitar and sing songs with your friends!

Fisherman: Now, isn't that strange? Isn't that what I'm doing now?

Moral of the story:
In the midst of trying to earn more money and creating your tower of wealth, do not neglect people, especially your family. In this CNY season, let's bring God's blessings to our family, relatives and friends. Be the child of God who honours, respects and love people.

There's no right timing. The right time is...now!

Last Day at TARC!!!

Today is officially my LAST day at TARC...did not sleep the whole night yesterday, trying my very best to memorise for my final paper.

It is finally...over.
